In May 2002, Tohoku was the site of a large earthquake, which killed 3,780 people. The quake triggered the largest quake record in Japan’s history, in 2011 when 13,000 people were killed.
Today, it was the last place in Japan to reach the 100th anniversary of the earthquake.
In March 2003 Prime Minister Sado Kudo ordered the evacuation of 20,000 residents of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
In April, The National Police (NPC) issued a complete evacuation order based on the latest news on the news of the quake. In late May the NPC released a report stating that there were only 80% of evacuees left alive.
